Oleg Makarov one of TOP 3 BEST MANAGING PARTNERS in Ukraine

01/12/2009

It’s already a year since Yurydychna Gazeta presented its unprecedented project “Lawyers of Ukraine 2008: Client’s Choice” to the legal community. It recognized of a great deal of domestic lawyers successfully operating in the legal services market from year to year. Since, this year, the economic crisis took its toll on everyone without exception and Yurydychna Gazeta postponed the publication of this edition, the editorial staff has made a responsible decision to use a new format of the publication in order to summ up preliminary results of the passing year in the format of separate articles at the end of 2009. These results are based on editorial office’s own opinion, observation of the companies’ behavior on the market, and achievements demonstrated by respective persons in the development of their own firms.

Yurydychna Gazeta singled out Mr. Oleg Makarov as one of the best top law firm managers stating that: "Oleg Marakov has been a partner of the firm since its establishment in 1992. In 2007, he became Managing Partner of the firm and was entrusted with management functions by Dr. Vasyl Kisil. This article is not going to list all the numerous recognitions of Oleg Makarov’s outstanding achievements in the legal profession, such as Yurydychna Premiya 2009 (Yurydychna Gazeta’s Prize 2009) or annual ratings Who’s Who Legal, Chambers Europe or Yurydychna Gazeta’s own survey – Client’s Choice 2009. Let us focus on his achievements as a manager. In particular, the foregoing rating “TOP-100. Best Top Managers of Ukraine” acknowledged Oleg Makarov as a successful leader among law firms for high professionalism and his know-how recently presented in Ukraine and abroad – the coordinate system of the legal services business, which was detailed by Yurydychna Gazeta (No. 14 (195) as of April 7, 2009). It is common knowledge that in October of the last year, on the initiative of Oleg Makarov, Vasil Kisil & Partners held a General Staff Meeting where firm’s employees were openly told that the country overall and all legal business as not exception is facing some serious turbulence - financial crisis would be followed by an economic crisis, which would later trigger a social crisis. But VKP management assured everyone of two most important things: things are under control and we shall go through these difficult times together. We also know that when a lot of managers asked a question: “To survive or to develop?” Oleg Makarov clearly set on a path of development and growth. There were no staff lay-offs in the firm and nobody had his/her salary reduced. Instead, serious investments were made into personnel and professional development and into streamlining all of the business processes. Furthermore, both lawyers and administrative managers of Vasil Kisil & Partners know that partners did not distribute a significant portion of past year’s partner profit and invested it into human resources instead. They did it quite consciously. When the USD/UAH exchange rate went up so fast that almost every employee was worried about paying his/her foreign currency loans and, generally, about what would be next, Oleg Makarov personally (!) approached every single person and told them about what the firm could and could not do to compensate the hryvnia’s slump.

Today, in the new reality of limited budgets, special leadership qualities of a manager gain more and more relevance: quick decision making ability, innovativeness, and ability to inspire the team for efficient work. In the opinion of his colleagues, Oleg Makarov has proved his ability to accomplish just that.”
